Disclosure Letter

Welcome to a brand new school year at Quest Academy! I am excited to work with you and your children! Just a few things you should know about the school year… Homework Folder: Each night, your child will bring home a folder. One pocket will include papers that can remain at home (letters to you from me, completed assignments, letters from the school, etc.) The other pocket will include papers that need to be completed and sent back to school (homework, questionnaires, permission slips, etc.) Homework: I will send home homework via e-mail every Friday. I have found this system to be very effective. It eliminates the chance of your child misplacing their homework on their way home. Your child is expected to turn in their homework by the next Friday. The assignment is considered late after Friday and one point will be taken off for each day it is late. Also, I will not accept missing work for assignments more than one week late. I inform your children that they do not have to do homework on the weekends. If you do a little each night you should only have 10 min. of homework a night. Homework should not be overwhelming, especially in 1st grade. If you are not able to print off homework packets from home please let me know and I will print them for you. We will be having a homework reward activity monthly for all students who have all their homework turned in for the month. Light Steps/Reading Folder: Your child will be bringing home a folder with a phonics program called Light Steps. Please take a few minutes each night to work on one page. Each page needs to be mastered before they move on to the next page. This might take 1 - 2 days or it might take 5-6 days. Each child will move at their own pace. In the folder your child will also be bringing home a take home reading book. These books have between 1 to 5 stories in each book depending on the level. Please have your child read a minimum of one story to you each night. As soon as you have signed off that they have read all the stories in the book, I will send home a new book. This folder needs to be returned each day. Availability: I would appreciate it if you looked over your child’s homework and help them with anything they are still struggling with. If you do not understand what I am expecting in an assignment, I will be available at the school from 3-3:45 Monday through Friday to help you and your child. You can also e-mail me on specific things and I can work with them during school. Make up work: I appreciate your help in getting your child’s homework in each week. Getting behind can be very overwhelming. I do understand that things happen and if you are unable to get it in one week, please just get it to me as soon as possible. If the semester has ended I will not be able to give your child credit, so please try to get missing homework in as soon as possible. Access to Student Information System: The SIS is a great way for you to stay updated on what assignments your child has turned in for the semester. I will update SIS every Monday evening. Please check it weekly to ensure your child is not behind. For those of you not familiar with SIS, please go to our school webpage (questacademycharter.org), click on the student information system link and enter your child’s username and password. This information will be given to you as soon as the office receives all the student information sheets and gets them entered into the system. I will get those out to you as soon as they are available. Discipline: Our school wide policy for discipline is a card system. If your child stays on green, they obeyed all of our classroom rules. If they are on yellow they had to have a warning. Red means they have broken a rule and had 2 warnings. If they get to red they will need to complete a stop-think-do, which is a review of what they need to work on to improve their behavior. Rewards: If we as a class obey all the school rules and do our best we get rewards within our class. Rewards in the past have been lunch in our classroom, earning a class pet, extra recess, read-a-thon, extra gym time, free time in class.
